Questions about IP addresses
An IP address is the number that identifies a device on a network, so data can find its way to and from it.
IPv4
32-bit format, in use since 1983.
192.0.2.146IPv6
128-bit format, far larger space.
2001:db8:3333:4444::ffffWhat is the difference between a public and a private IP?
A public IP is assigned by your ISP and is what websites see. A private IP (such as 192.168.1.10) is used only inside your local network.
How do I find my public IP?
Open myipfind.com. Your IPv4 and IPv6 addresses are shown at the top of the page.
Can I hide my IP address?
Yes. A VPN or proxy routes your traffic through another server, so sites see that server’s IP instead of yours.
Why is one of my addresses “Not detected”?
Many networks still hand out only an IPv4 address, and some mobile networks are IPv6-only. Either way you can reach the whole web, because your provider translates between the two. You only need both if a specific service asks for it.
